Now That All Your Worry, by Hafiz
Now That All Your Worry, by Hafiz
Now that all your worry has proved such an
unlucrative business, why not find a better job?
— Hafiz, trans. Daniel James
I came across this couplet a few years ago and could probably do with taking the advice more often! I love pithy poems with a little sting or hint of irony, and this one made me chuckle.
Hafiz was a hugely influential Persian poet from the 14th century, and I’m glad to have been able to enjoy some of his works in English. Apparently many of his verses are still cited today as popular proverbs or sayings, and many of them are difficult to translate into English because of ambiguously mystical language and assumed knowledge throughout. This isn’t something I know much about, so if you know of a good starter edition or book I would love your recommendations!
